I STOLE TO BUY CLOTHES FOR MY BABY, MAN CONFESSES

An Abuja Magistrate Court has sentenced a 22-year-old mason to six months imprisonment on Friday after confessing that he stole some baby’s clothes from a shop in Kubwa for his one year old baby.
 
Abdul Mohammed was accused of Criminal trespass, theft and having possession of items reasonably suspected to be stolen, offences contrary to Sections 342, 288 and 319 of the Penal code.
 
Police Prosecutor, Igono Ocholi, told the court that one Mulikatu Abdulkadir, of Nafada road, Kubwa on July 24, reported at Kubwa Police station, of how the accused entered the shop she is managing under the guise that he wanted to buy some items.
He said the suspect remained in the shop with the intention to steal some dresses valued at N22,500.
According to the prosecutor, while the accused was trying to escape with the stolen items, he was arrested and the items recovered.
 
He further said that on interrogation, he was found to be in possession of properties suspected to have been stolen from a shop at Byazhin.
 
When the charges were read to the accused, he pleaded guilty and asked the court to tamper justice with mercy, explaining that his baby’s lack of clothes forced him to steal the items.
Magistrate Samuel Edhiari sentenced the accused to six months imprisonment with an option of N5,000 fine.
