SUNDERLAND ROAD TRAGEDY GIRL SARAH GAVE GIFT OF LIFE TO OTHERS ON HER DYING BED

A teenage girl who died after being struck by a car in Sunderland wanted to give the gift of life to others.

Sarah Jane Burke, 17, asked for her organs to be donated in the event of her death and her devastated family say her wishes have been carried out.

Sarah was critically injured when she was knocked down in the city's Ormonde Street as she crossed the road at 5.30pm last Tuesday.

She was only a short distance from her home in Cleveland Road when tragedy struck. She was airlifted to hospital but died from her injuries almost a week after the accident.

In the aftermath of the crash, police charged David Mark Baillie, 39, with causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He entered no pleas when he appeared in before Sunderland Magistrates’ Court and the case will be heard in due course at Newcastle Crown Court.

Mr Baillie, from Magdalene Place, Pallion, Sunderland, was released on conditional bail until Thursday, October 3.

A 38-year-old man has been released with no further action as part of the inquiry.
Witnesses described how Sarah was hit by a blue Volvo and was found halfway between traffic lights and a pedestrian crossing.
