FG PAYS PHCN WORKERS WITH $3BN PRIVATISATION PROCEEDS

The $3bn generated from the sale of the successor electricity generation and distribution firms of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria will be used to settle the severance entitlements of its workers, the Bureau of Public Enterprises has said.

The BPE announced last week that it made $3bn from the sale of the power assets. The bureau also stated that the physical handover date of the power firms to their new owners might not be on November 1, 2013.The Director-General, BPE, Mr. Benjamin Dikki, said the bureau would not affirm the date of the physical handover yet until it was certain that all labour issues had been adequately resolved.

He spoke on the sidelines of a power expo organised by the Federal Ministry of Power in Abuja.Asked to state how much of the $3bn would be used to settle the PHCN workers, Dikki said, “Virtually all of it is going to labour payment. This has been communicated to them that the proceeds from the sales are going to be used to address the labour issues.”
