Segun Fabunmi, a former Chief Superintendent of Police, has been granted bail by a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja.
The bail in the sum of N250 million was granted to Mr. Fabunmi the trial judge, Olabisi Akinlade, who also ruled that, apart from the bail bond, Mr. Fabunmi must provide two sureties on the grounds that both of them have landed property worth N100 million in Lagos. One of the sureties must be at the directorate level at either the state or federal service, the judge added.
It would be recalled that the Divisional Police Officer (of Yaya-Abatan, Agege Police Station, Lagos) Segun Fabunmi, now dismissed, allegedly killed a protester, Adedamola Daramola (27), during the January 2012 protest. He was brought to trial on May 15 January 2012.
Mr. Daramola, it would be recalled, died instantly from sustained gunshot wounds. Also, four other people -- Chizoba Odoh (28), Joy Monday (21), Abubakar Alimi (41), Samuel Egbujor (24) -- also sustained injuries from AK47 rifle on the same day. Last month, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile of the Ikeja High Court, granted the unlucky four with N1 million each.
Now, Mr. Fabunmi faces a seven-count charge of murder, attempted murder and causing grievous bodily harm.
The Judge, Olabisi Akinlade, noted, "Only the living will appear before the court to face trial."
"The applicants averred that the second respondent [Mr. Fabunmi], whom they identified as a policeman, took a gun from another policeman and shot at them," the judge narrated. "This fact was not challenged by the first and second defendant and it is hereby deemed accepted."
July 16 has been fixed as a date when Mr. Fabunmi will face the trial.
